With the Olympic Winter Games starting on 6 February and the Paralympic Winter Games on 6 March, many of you may already be preparing to publish sports designs in your shops and/or on the Spreadshirt Marketplace. 

However, please note that strict rules apply. Designs that clearly reference the Olympic Games may not be used without prior permission from the rights holder. The examples shown above include logos and motifs that are legally protected and must not be used in your designs under any circumstances. 

This also applies to all combinations of “Olympics” or related terms such as “Olympic”, “Olympian”, or “Paralympic” with words like “Milan”, “Cortina”, “Italy”, “2026”, and similar. You should also be extremely careful when using rings, or even abstract representations that resemble the Olympic rings.

How does the new design pricing work?

For sales on the marketplace and external marketplaces, there is currently a fixed design price for each product category that can be printed with your design. However, this overlooks the fact that we offer affordable but fairly simple products as well as more expensive products, e.g. organic products. These products naturally cost us differently in purchasing, but also for the customers. The new design prices reflect this range.

We have also made adjustments for the ‘Create’ area. You can find the overview of all categories and the new prices here.

Why are we changing the Design Price?

We are convinced – print-on-demand is a very strong, sustainable and resource-saving business model, Nevertheless, the marketplace is also hard hit by the economic situation and growing competition. Unfortunately, passing on the increased costs for energy, logistics, and printing one-to-one to the customers of the marketplace is not an option. Therefore, we have divided the design price by product category into 3 levels and thus also adjusted the basis for your compensation.

We also want to guarantee a sustainable and fair relationship with our designer community – in other words, with you. We are aware that you also face the same economic challenges as we do as a company. With the new model, we are therefore trying to provide a balanced solution. While the design prices for some product categories decrease, they remain the same or even increase for others. So it may well be that you don’t notice the new design award structure that much.

Why don’t we just increase the Marketplace product prices across the board?

The Spreadshirt Marketplace has now been around for over 17 years. Of course, online retail has changed enormously in the meantime. The Marketplace now competes with platforms such as Amazon, Etsy and other print-on-demand providers. Simply raising retail prices in the Marketplace would result in us losing customers – and therefore selling fewer of your designs. This would be neither in your nor in our interest.

How are designs compensated that have been adjusted with the new AI function?

In the coming months, we will expand our product designer with an AI functionality. This allows our customers to customise marketplace designs, including yours, individually via prompt. We expect this to improve the user experience in our shop, increase order rates, and lead to more satisfied customers.

If customers use your design and adapt it with the AI function, you will still receive compensation based on the design price for the chosen product category – regardless of how much the original design has been changed. This function therefore offers you another way to earn money with your designs at Spreadshirt.

Conclusion

Given the current economic situation, with rising costs in all areas and increasing competition in the market, it is probably not surprising for you that Spreadshirt also has to respond to these challenges. But instead of raising retail prices that could put off customers, we want to provide a long-term, sustainable perspective for the Marketplace. We are convinced that the Marketplace can only develop sustainably with a transparent compensation model for designers, as well as attractive products and prices for customers. We will start this from September 15th.

FYI: If you only operate a Spreadshop, neither the new design price nor the upcoming AI function applies to you.

In recent months, we’ve expanded our range with in-demand products that marketplace customers love. Pair these new items with your best-selling designs and treat yourself to some extra holiday earnings during the busiest time of the year. The best part? It only takes a few clicks to get started!

More products, more profit

Go to your partner area and click on one of your already published designs, ideally your bestseller. Then click on ‘Edit’ in the ‘Product selection’. You will now see your current product selection for this design. At the top right, you will see how many products you currently have activated – and how many products can be used for this design.

To activate the maximum number of products, click on ‘All products’ and then on ‘Select all’ at the top left. Now click on ‘Done’ again and apply the changes and you have multiplied the sales potential for your design. Repeat these steps for all your other designs that have also sold well in the past.

Don’t forget about metadata

Finally, briefly check whether the metadata is still up to date or whether you can optimise it for the Christmas season. With the metadata, you ensure that your designs can be found on the marketplace. Add information that makes the design attractive as a Christmas gift.

There are 16 million designs on our Marketplace right now. Every day, 8,000 to 10,000 new designs are uploaded. We’re thrilled with these incredible numbers. They make us very proud. They’re proof that Spreadshirt is a true Marketplace for creative ideas, sustained by its designers. At the same time, this vast quantity of designs has its disadvantages, too. The Marketplace has become too hard to navigate.

Why are we removing some designs from the Marketplace?

Our long-term goal remains to make the Marketplace a more appealing sales platform. It should be quicker and easier to find the designs that people actually want to buy. But how do we pull this off?

Simple: by boosting the visibility of in-demand designs. We do this by ensuring they don’t disappear among masses of designs that no one is buying.

That’s why we’re removing all designs that have been published on the Marketplace for three years without ever being sold. Our aim is to make it easier for people to find your designs – and help boost your revenue as a result.

What are the criteria for removing designs from the Marketplace?

First of all, most importantly: We won’t delete any of your designs. We only want to remove designs from the Marketplace that are not in demand. All your designs will still be available in your Partner Area.

Designs are being removed from the Marketplace based on the following criteria:

• Designs that have been published on the marketplace for three years and
• Designs that have not been sold in that time

What do I need to do next?

Nothing! This blog post is simply intended to keep you up to date with the planned changes. Your designs will be stored in your Partner Area until further notice and you can download them and back them up on your own devices whenever you like.

How do I find out which of my designs are being removed from the Marketplace?

When the market cleanup is complete, we will inform you of design deactivation again by email and a notification in the Partner Area. You can view the deactivated designs in the Partner Area.

Which designs are affected in particular?

There are all kinds of designs that refer to specific events and years: Christmas 2008, Back to School 2012, Best Bachelorette 2015, to name a few.

These designs are so specific that users didn’t purchase them back then and won’t in the future, since they refer to the past. Removing these designs will make the Marketplace easier to navigate, helping customers make decisions more quickly and easily and improving search results.

Will designs be removed from the Marketplace regularly from now on?

No, we are predicting that this cleanup will dramatically improve the visibility of in-demand designs. We’ve also continually updated the Marketplace guidelines in the past, which means that newer design uploads include many more designs customers want to buy.

This also means that the current guidelines for publishing designs on the Marketplace aren’t changing.
