How to Use Keywords, Boards & Pins on Pinterest

You’ve set up your Pinterest board, filled out your profile and are ready to get started? Here are some essential tips on pins, boards and keywords.

What are the different types of pins?

There are different types of pins you can use to promote your designs. It’s best to use a mix.

Image Pins

Producing photos, illustrations and graphics for Pinterest is easy and pays off quickly.

  • Use .png or .jpeg files, max. 20 MB
  • Optimal ratio: 2:3 (1,000 x 1,500 pixels)
  • Use templates in Canva, Photoshop and Co. for a uniform look across all your pins or boards
  • Clear titles and descriptions will help your images be found more easily
  • Regularity is important: use posting tools like Tailwinder to post your pins automatically

Video Pins

Video Pins are a bit more elaborate, but especially rewarding. Make sure they’re not too long and that they’re fun to watch!

  • Use .mp4, .mov or .m4v files, maximum 2 GB
  • Video length: 4 seconds to 15 minutes
  • Ratio 1:1 or vertically 2:3 or 9:16
  • The first few seconds should grab the viewer’s attention
  • The video should work without audio
  • Don’t forget a suitable thumbnail image

Idea Pins

Idea Pins are multi-page pins, visually comparable to Instagram Stories. They are perfect for showing processes or visually telling a story! You can use both images and videos.

  • Use .bmp, .jpeg, .png, .tiff or .webp files (images max 20 MB and videos max 100 MB).
  • Individual videos can be between 3-60 seconds long
  • Arouse user curiosity and start with a video and text overlays
  • Create an arc of suspense
  • Use only your own content

What is a Pinterest pinboard and why do I need it?

A board (or pinboard) holds different pins that fit together thematically. Pinboards are very important and should be well maintained. Follow these tips:

  • Create at least 5 pinboards with about 20 pins each
  • Use simple and clear titles and descriptions
  • Design matching pinboard covers with Canva or Photoshop
  • Search similar niches on Pinterest and check out the boards
  • Also add pins of other people or companies on your pinboards
  • Create a pinboard for inspiration – for example with quotes or beautiful pictures
  • Pinboards drive traffic and new followers – so they should not be set up as pure sales boards.
  • Think outside the box!

How do I use keywords on Pinterest?

Whether it’s an image, a video or an idea pin, your keywords will help users discover your Pinterest boards and make you a success. Follow these tips to find keywords that perfectly match your pins.

  1. Think about what keywords your target audience would use on Pinterest and write them down.
  2. Be precise: even if they are not very creative, you should use simple keywords that have a clear meaning.
  3. Enter your keywords one by one on Pinterest. As with Google, Pinterest also suggests frequently searched longtail keywords*. Write down these suggestions and keywords from the search results or the suggestions for “Similar Search Queries”.

*What is a Longtail Keyword?

A long-tail keyword consists of several words and is therefore a particularly detailed keyword. With the help of long-tail keywords, you make it easier for a niche audience to find you.

  1. Repeat your research every now and then, as keywords can change over time. This is because the Pinterest algorithm is also based on bookmarked pins, forwards, and comments.
