Ever since Tyra Banks provided us with a deeper insight into the nature of top models, the whole world is well aware of how tough it is to make it in this business. Good looks and what you’d generally call “talent” just isn’t enough. Next to shedding a few tears and undiluted pearls of sweat, it takes a lot of stamina to exude glamour in an aloof and adorable way. “Never dull your shine for somebody else,” we hear her say…
Pictures from the heart
At Spreadshirt, we like to think we’re doing it a little differently. Our latest shoot was a very fluffy affair: no reptiles or creepy crawlers made any appearance, and the climatic conditions were sweetly kept at moderate room temperature. The setting for our photos turned out to be a feel-good world with soulful R&B playing in the background. And our models were all smiles, all the way.
There’s a simple reason why it worked so well: we thought it a good idea to generate a happy and serene mood by choosing a real couple to give the setting a more natural air, and we weren’t disappointed. Felix and Julia found it easy to settle into the situation, and we think this is also something that comes out very well in the pictures. It was their sunshiny sparks that inspired our photographer Jasmina to take these awesome shots.
Champagne? Still water, please
And how did the bling-bling and glam come to the forefront, you may ask? It surely wasn’t due to consuming copious amounts of champagne since everyone was happy to get through the afternoon on still water. Well, some had a cup of reviving green tea, to be fair.
We staged the shoot at an apartment that Jasmina discovered on airbnb (a website for people to rent out lodging), which proved to be very clever as we didn’t even have to create a homely atmosphere. The owner was happy to see his flat take centre stage for a professional photo shoot as well.
What you can‘t see in the photos: we placed two bright spotlights behind the camera to generate more light so that Jasmina could take shots without using her flash. This meant that the models had to make do with looking into the blinding light at times, but – professionals that they were – they mastered this challenge with ease. Our creative director, graphic artists and social media manager all weighed in with their humble opinions to get all the poses right. Everything from the fall of the folds to a naturally looking fit of the pyjamas had to be perfect, and Jasmina’s experience helped bring out the best out of the situation. She had the finger on the shutter when the smiles had won her over.
