Trend Report: Autumn Designs 2015

What kind of designs do people want to print on their Christmas gifts? We had a look at the biggest trending search terms between August and October this year to give you an idea of what’s trending these days. Get your Shop up to scratch, and get inspired by the top 10 search terms on Google and the Spreadshirt Marketplace.

The Marketplace Top 10

These were the top 10 search terms* on the Spreadshirt UK Marketplace between August and October:

1) christmas
2) birthday
3) cycling
4) music
5) I love
6) beard
7) keep calm
8) funny sayings
9) engineer
10) big sister

*We have omitted repeat results from our last list to help expand the search

Next to some of the usual suspects (birthday, I Love, Keep Calm), a few surprising design searches have made the list in the late summer/early autumn months. Cycling is a sport gaining more and more popularity in Britain, and this is reflected by a high-ranking in the search term list. Spreadshirt’s #spreadmusic competition may have had a bearing on the term ‘music’, and ‘beards’ are en vogue in the hairiest of fashion these days. Designs with funny sayings, engineers and big sisters complete our top 10 – and we shall hope this gives you inspiration about what to include in your Shop.

The Google Top 10

In the same period, Google search terms were topped with the following words and phrases:

1) band
2) best friends
3) bodybuilding
4) cool quote
5) funny pregnancy
6) gaming
7) motorcycle
8) sports
9) funny gym
10) vegan

This Google list delivers a great insight into what kind of designs and gifts people look for. Hobbies make up half of the terms on this list (1, 3, 6, 7, 8), and ‘best friends’ and ‘funny pregnancy’ tells you what kind of gifts people look for. Cool quotes never get old, and putting some ‘swag’ or ‘vegan’ designs on a T-shirt surely won’t do any harm either.

Up and coming Trends

We can of course not predict every trending term, but there are a few occasions coming up in the big run down to Christmas that will have folks looking for certain designs. It’s safe to say that not all of these events are as big as Christmas, but – for example – International TV day would make for a great occasion to run a social media campaign to promote funny TV designs in your shop (think TV series, Simpsons, Marvel heroes, etc.). The same applies to the other occasions we’ve listed below!

20th November: World Kids’ Day
21 th November: International TV Day
29 th November: 1st Advent
1 th December: World AIDS Day
6 th December: St. Nicholas

…and let them know it’s Christmas!
