Design Shop Window: Geek

Geeks, nerds & freaks: And who is that supposed to be? Well, geeks are said to roam computer labs and electrical goods departments. This means that geeks are very savvy folks. Which is why some don’t like them. And to set the record straight, here’s for a few designs to give our geeks more street cred:

Bottom line: Everyone should have a geek (or be one)!

Design Window Shopping: Hipster

Whatever the trend – the Hipster is still going strong. Let me quote:

Hipster refers to a subculture of young, urban middle-class adults and older teenagers.  Hipster culture has been described as a “mutating, trans-Atlantic melting pot of styles, tastes and behavior”. Christian Lorentzen of Time Out New York argues that “hipsterism fetishizes the authentic” elements of all of the “fringe movements of the postwar era—beat, hippie, punk, even grunge”, and draws on the “cultural stores of every unmelted ethnicity”, and “regurgitates it with a winking inauthenticity.” (Source: Wikipedia).

Wanna release the hipster in you? Here‘s a recommendation:

Still alive or mutated hipster?

Put the record straight for your products

Presentation is vital for the success of the products in your online shop. When it comes to clothing that customers would traditionally like to touch or try on, product pictures are a helpful means to breathing life into your t-shirts. Photos are also a way of giving your shop more authenticity so that you can give you speaced-out, funny or completely realistic designs a more respectable sales floor.

We always strive to make image material available for your needs, but this is unfortunately not always possible for every shop. And since family and friends do probably not really feel like posing for your shop photos, you need to be a bit inventive. Look for people who like having their picture taken. But where do you find them?

The broad expanse of the Internet provides you with an answer! There are platforms that offer an interface for models, photographers, agencies and customers. Modelmanagement.com , for example, holds the big advantage of brokering not only the services of professional models only, but also of Joe Bloggs and Jane Hoggs. Those people next door who simply love having their picture taken. High connection charges asked by agencies are avoided by making use of this free and handy platform. Become your own model scout, check out the profiles and get in touch with a model yourself.

And to avoid picking a model located in Chile or China, a variety of filters help you select your country, town etc. Further filter options such as gender, age and height make it easy to find just the right model for your shop.

It’s well worth checking out! Look for the face of your autumn collection and get your sales off the ground. Read more

My Shirt, My Voice: A tough case of hyper-correction

In 2006, my former flat mate from Lithuania wrote her first ever paper in English. Seeing that she could do with a little assistance, I offered her to proofread her essay. For me that was the beginning of a long and winding path to perfection when it comes to text: I just have to get anything in writing down to a gnat ‘s eyebrow.

Gawdon Bennet! My dicshunary is me castle! When introduced to the world of starry-eyed do-gooders of language, I quickly suffered from a severe case of referential lookup wizardry. Years of neglectful ignorance towards common rules of grammar, spelling, punctuation and neat expression needed a lot of catching-up.

Doh-doh-doh-doh! Maybe this is what turned me into a bit of a linguistic control freak. I just couldn’t relax anymore, whether it was when reading fiction or facts. Much to the dismay of my immediate surroundings, I soon developed this nasty habit of correcting my friends and colleagues as well. And obviously that’s nothing anybody is quite fond of.

This is when I steered away from typos and got into typography. That was around 4 years ago, and ever since I’ve been discovering the detailed geography of the world of fonts. Typesetting, calligraphy, serifs and non-breaking space – there is a universe of distinguishing typeface features out there! And remember: an apostrophe is a single upper 9-shaped quotation mark! Admittedly, this discipline is a lot about how to present written messages in a perfect way.

But there is also beauty in imperfection. This is something I learnt on realising that making a gaffe or an error of form can indeed have a positive effect on text. One of my favourite blog posts deals with using redundant quotation marks. Highly “recommended”!

Some might say “is it really that important”? To which I would reply “absolutely!” as written messages can either deliver ideas in a pertinent way, or they can fail, at least to a certain extent. And this is why I also put great stress on punctuation, uniform writing style as well as attention to typographic details.
