SEO Training with the SEO expert Alex: Part 2

Step 2: Optimise your Shop’s Homepage

In the user area of your shop you will find a tab called Shops. Please look in the left box Settings under URL & Linking. Here you can determine e.g. your shop’s name the way you want your clients to enter it in their browser.

1. Use your main keyword in your shop URL…using a word such as ‘t-shirt’ or similar helps.
For Example: Supposing a shop selling t-shirts with cute teddy-bear designs can be found under goodorder.spreadshirt.net/. This URL bears no relevance whatever to the content of the shop. Standing to reason would be a URL containing the word “teddy” or “teddy-bear”.
The following URL names seem like a better idea to improve search-ability: teddyshirts.spreadshirt.net; t-shirtteddy.spreadshirt.net or shirtbear.spreadshirt.net (NB – don’t use capitalisations or accents such as “à” or “ü”). Alternatively, you can also deploy the word ‘cute’ or other fitting adjectives.

The next two options you can find under Info & Meta.

2. Page meta title: use 5-6 words – strongest keywords come first.
The meta title (go to Meta Data -> Title) is the clickable headline that you find in Google searches, and this is why it is a very important means of communication to make your shop visible. Put the strongest keyword first to improve your chances with Google. For our teddy-bear shop this means:
‘Teddy-Bear T-Shirt Shop’ (the keyword ‘t-shirt’ should be used)

3. Meta description…use 2-3 short sentences.
Please go to Meta data -> description. Here you can define the text that people can see in the search list under the URL and your search title. If you got the keywords right which potential customers use to look for t-shirts, these keywords appear bold in their search. The better your keywords, the more people find your shop. In this description you should also use the top keyword first, followed by 2-3 more keywords that you think work best. Choose your words carefully, because a text that is simple and easy to understand works best. Use active and inviting language.
