Thank God that Father’s Day is a normal Sunday, so even though pubs and restaurants may be busy, there’s still a chance to spend the day with the old man. But why on this day?
Well, some say that the idea of Father’s Day originates in pagan sun worship. In this view, the sun is seen as the father of the universe, and summer solstice is in close proximity to this day as well. And like so many things, celebrating fatherhood on a special day swept across the pond from the states. In the US it’s been celebrated for over a hundred years, and many dads have come to like this tradition in the UK.
Father’s Day in the UK is a day to tell your dad that he’s still got what it takes, and that he probably is the best male role model you could have wished for. You won’t tell him that you still find it funny when he shouts at the TV screen just because his team is screwing up, and you just about tolerate his mediocre table manners and advice on how to lead your life (in a way he never could). But you still love him. And that’s why you should seize the occasion on Father’s Day to take him out for a pint or write him a nice greeting card if you should happen to live in different part of the country.
And of course, we at Spreadshirt are all for gift ideas for dads with designs and slogans saying “The World’s Best Dad”, “For My Father” or just “Dad”. Just imagine his face when he sees his personalised Father’s Day T-shirt or other Father’s Day gift for the first time. Priceless. There are also people who are father figures to many people that you can make happy with a small personalised gift. Your grandfather surely deserves recognition just like your fathers-in-law or any male role model in your life. A lot of people personalise Father’s Day gifts like personalised ties, socks, boxer shorts, jumpers and even flip-flops. The decision for a small gift is easy when he’s a gadget lover, just think a custom accessory for his smartphone, tablet (e.g. iPad covers) or notebook bag that helps your father protect his precious gadget. Photo gifts are also a popular choice for many to give a more personal touch to their Father’s Day present. When printed on T-shirts, mugs and even ties, your Father’s Day surprise becomes an instant hit. Your father will take your personalised gift to the office or workplace to remind him of his family while working away from home. And to show off to his colleagues, of course!
Some families celebrate Father’s Day by taking the old man out on a picnic or spending a whole weekend together away from home. For these trips, it’s a great idea to personalise a blanket or apron saying that he is Super Dad or The Best Dad Ever. This is one of our presents for dad which may turn a simple walk in the countryside or a whole planned “experience” into something more fun. And if you’re still looking for ideas of how to make your father’s day, take him out for a spin drive on a fire engine, rally car, tank or even airplane. Too fancy? Well, most men enjoy the simple pleasures: take him out to play golf or watch a football or cricket match. And if all this is out of the picture, we are sure that a roast dinner with meat, stuffing, potatoes and vegetables at a nice bar or restaurant accompanied by pint of his choice will really make his day. As long as he’s wearing his personalised Father’s Day T-shirt, that is 🙂
