8 Surprising Facts about the Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy

Immortality, piercing eyes or the ability to fly, life as a superhero seems to be rather nice. It doesn’t come without concessions, though. Serving justice to fight the forces of evil is not the most relaxing task. Some super heroes (aka those carrying a ‘man’ in their moniker) seem to neglect the fun in saving our universe. Evidently, the Guardians of the Galaxy are a different kettle of fish, and we’ve piled up a hill of facts documenting why the Guardians are so special.

1. Rocket based on Oreo

Rocket Racoon Guardians of the Galaxy

To make Rocket Racoon more realistic on the big screen, director James Gunn took inspiration from a real raccoon called Oreo. Often present on set, Oreo has greatly influenced the character of Rocket.

2. Not the Originals

Guardians of the Galaxy

Although our friends Rocket, Groot, Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax have become the stars of the show, they were not part of the first members of the Guardians. These initially appeared in 1969, and the crew consisted of Vance Astro, Martinex, Charlie-27 and Yondu back in the day.

3. Vintage Soundtrack

Different strokes for different folks. The Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack seems to unite the masses, though. It landed a number 1 in the US Billboard charts and many other countries – without even releasing a single (which had never happened before). And it seems only fitting that Star-Lord’s Walkman affinity has made way for a release on tape as well.

4. The Great Groot

Groot Guardians of the Galaxy

The wooden guard’s name – Groot – has many different meanings. It’s an African clawless otter as well as a Dutch word meaning “great.” However that may be, the name fits him like a glove, we’d like to think.

5. Tearful Drax

When Dave Bautista was chosen for the role of Drax, he burst into tears of joy. He immediately enrolled in further acting classes to live up to the challenge.

6. Vin Diesel Voiced Groot

I am Groot

By his own account, Vin Diesel said the line “I am Groot” more than a thousand times. This circumstance may be owed to the fact that he had to do the voiceover for 5 other languages as well. It made sure that the voice of Groot didn’t get lost in translation.

7. Getting ink done

Drax Tatoos

Drax whole body tattoo demanded a whole lot of time and patience from Dave Bautista. Before each shoot, almost 5 hours were needed to apply the makeup. Chris Pratt (who played Star-Lord) even conceded that Dave had to stand throughout the whole makeup session. Kudos!

8. Hot moves

Baby Groot

As in every Marvel film, the credits always seize an opportunity to finish off in style. Guardians of the Galaxy is no different, and we get the chance to marvel at a dancing baby Groot. Director James Gunn himself did the choreography, and the animated dance moves let us imagine just how he may have looked doing them in the flesh…

What did you make of the chaos gang movie? What is your favourite guardian? And do you have any other fun facts to share about Groot, Rocket & co.? Please do let us know!
