What makes a design “good”? And how can you make sure your designs are found and purchased? Here are our tips.
Tip 1: Aim for high design quality
Pay attention to high design quality. Make sure the artistic quality is just as good as the quality of the file you upload.
Your designs should be optimised for print to guarantee the best results (and satisfied customers). You can read all about how to achieve the best design quality here.
Tip 2: Select products with care
After you have uploaded your designs to your Partner Area, it’s time to design your product. There are over 140 products on the Marketplace. From clothing for children and adults to accessories and home & living items – choose your products wisely. The products you publish your designs on and how you place your designs can determine whether a customer purchases it or not. Learn more about creating products here.
Find the balance
Make sure the design and product fit! The easiest way to do this is to imagine what your customers are looking for. Would they like to buy your design on a shirt? On a mug? On a bag?
Find your target group
It’s important to know who is interested in your designs and to choose products accordingly. For example, let’s say you create a design for red wine lovers and publish it on all products. A customer searches for red wine T-shirts and comes across your design in the search results – on a maternity shirt! Another pregnant customer looks for a maternity T-shirts and sees your red wine design… Even if these customers like your design, they won’t buy it because they’ve seen it on the wrong product.
This goes for all target audiences: For example, designs for kids look best on kids’ T-shirts. But when published on teenager or adult shirts, they don’t work.
Choose the right colours
When you select a product, it’s important to deselect certain colours of a product if they are a bad fit for your design. Important: black designs are hard to see on black products. We’ve created handy design templates for black and white designs so that you don’t have to deactivate individual colours each time.
Use design templates
Publish your designs faster and easier with the template function. You can create your own templates for your target audience. And you can also use existing templates. Templates help avoid mistakes and save time. You can read more about design templates here.
Tip 3: Design placement
One of the most common mistakes we see in product design is bad design placement. Poor placement can have a very bad effect on your sales. Only 5% of all Marketplace customers want to personalise a product themselves. Most people look for a finished product that they don’t need to adjust.
Make sure to place your design so that it looks its best. With shirts, the design usually ends up in the middle of the chest. Also make sure that your design is not too small (or too big). Very detailed designs should be placed as large as possible on small products like coasters, mugs or caps.
Metadata
After you’ve uploaded a design, you need to add the metadata: a design name, description and keywords. The meta data is used to find your design on Google and on the Spreadshirt Marketplace. They are extremely important for your success as a Marketplace Designer. Start improving your metadata by reading this.
Have fun designing, uploading, describing and placing your designs! Do you have any further questions? Post them here in the comments.
