Meet a Spreader: CMO Phil Talks Spreadshirt and Management

Philip Rooke joined Spreadshirt in August of 2009 and was promoted to our Management Team a year later as Chief Marketing Officer. Phil is responsible for marketing, sales and product management for our entire platform, and we thought you should get to know him a little better. Actually, I wanted to learn a little about him myself! So, I thought up a few questions and gathered some more from Twitter.

I split the interview into three different videos. The first about his personal life and life in Germany. The second video focuses on what he did before Spreadshirt, what exactly he does on a typical day and a little about what’s coming to Spreadshirt. The final segment focuses on his approach to management and experiences with business cultures in the UK, US and Germany. Phil: meet the community. Community: meet Phil.

By Partners for Partners: Tips for a Successful Shop

The weather might not be a sign, but the calendar doesn’t lie. Spring is coming and the t-shirt season along with it! This is a great chance to get your shop in shape and fit by the time your customers are out there looking for tees. You can find some helpful tips in our Spreaducation section and here in the blog:

But, we’re thinking that we aren’t the only ones that have something to say about the t-shirt business. That’s why we decided to turn the tables around a little. We want to let some of our partners have a say in things and share some of their own tips in different areas of the online t-shirt business. How do things work? For example, answers to questions like:

  • How do I use CSS to embed a t-shirt shop in a website or blog?
  • How do I create a vector design for plot printing?
  • How do I use social media to market my shop online?
  • What is the right price for my product?

Those are just a few ideas we thought of. What are you interested in learning? Perhaps you have some experience in a certain area that would be useful for other partners? We want you to share this with the world! Then please write us an email at stories at spreadshirt . net or leave a comment below.

So, what do you want to learn or share?!

Trend Report: 1.3 Million Words Say More Than a Design

Every so often we take a closer look at exactly what our customers are putting on their shirts. More specifically we collected all of the words that were printed on shirts in the UK, the US and Germany over the past year.

Yowsers! We had a list of 1.3 million words – quite the base for us to find out what kind of words people are wearing. As always we sifted through this data set to try and make sense of it all.

Some words are just hard to imagine on shirts. Here’s a selection from our customers’ creative shirt wording skills that each occurred only once on a shirt in 2010:

pontylicious, pericombobulations, mousse-tashinators, jiggalicious, igglepiggle, gleeky, gigantasophobia, discombobulation, deathspank, confuzzeled, anthropomorphic,

Some fun stats:

  • Men’s names were used three times as much as women’s names
  • Dad is the new mom. Dad, Daddy and papa were printed almost twice as much as their female equivalents
  • The most printed word is “I”. “You” was used about 5,000 uses behind the egoists.

We love how our shirts can tell a story. Each of the bold words were high on the list of names, places and things people added to their shirts.

Further Price Increases for 4 Products

At the end of the month we will have to increase our prices on 4 products. We already explained the reasons for these increases in detail last October. The price of cotton has increased steadily over the past few months and broke through $2/pound just last week. Transport costs are also on the rise and will continue to grow throughout this year, adding to the overall price increase.

Due to these factors, those who produce and supply our products have increased their prices on 60 of our products by an average of 36%. Many have already informed us that they have planned further price increases for the second quarter of 2011. We have been in regular contact with our suppliers to work out the best possible strategy for the upcoming months.

That leads us to our price situation. We punched the numbers and came to the conclusion that we will have to increase the base price of (only) 4 products in our range. You can find which 4 products and how much the increases are in the forum.

New Products Part Deux: Fancy and Super-Soft

Just like I promised – we’ve got even more new products for you to design and create! Off we go! Let me introduce a fancy, stylish and very comfortable top for the ladies: Women’s Boat Neck Long Sleeve Top by bella. I love this one! The huge neckline provides lots of creative ways to wear it. You can go the sexy route by showing a little shoulder shoulders or you can be a bit more casual by moving the neckline a bit deeper to the front or back to choose the skin you want to show ;).

I like it to combine it with a tank top underneath, which gives it a sporty 80s look or pimp it up with a big scarf that gives your outfit a glamorous touch. The product is available in black, heather navy and deep heather and in sizes S-XL. You can print on this top with all print techniques. Read more
