Random Acts of Spreadshirt – Valentine’s Day Special

Valentine’s Day is here! For some, a special day filled with special gifts. For others, it’s just another February 14th. I belong to the second group and mean no disrespect to those in the first group with my excuse motto:

“I don’t really believe in giving gifts on a made-up day. I like to give gifts when they least expect it – just for fun.”

And you never can get a reservation at a restaurant anyways. Some guys or gals might not have that as an option on days like toay. But random gifts on days they least expect it, “just for the sake of it”, can really do the trick. And I want to help those who think like me and (for whatever reason) didn’t give someone a gift today.

Now’s your chance to get that un-forced, non-Valentine’s gift for FREE! All you have to do is tell us the following:
1. For whom? Who is the lucky recipient?
2. What? Which product (from the Marketplace or Spreadshirt shop)
3 Why? Tell us why you want to gift that product.

Either answer those three questions in a comment below (or send it secretly to us: stories AT spreadshirt.net). You have until Wednesday at noon – and then we will pick three winners who will be awarded with a voucher for their shirt.

UPDATE! We’ve chosen our Random Acts of Spreadshirt winners! MartYn from comments below, and two from our German blog: Kes von Mauseohr with the Beetlebum T-Shirt and Romibello with a shirt for his best friend Silvio Berlusconi. We’ll be in contact with the winners. Thanks to all participants and enjoy your free shirts!

Mark Your Words UK/EU* – Personal Rights and Assange

Every so often we get a design submitted to our platform with the image or likeness of someone. Sometimes it’s a photo, but mostly we get a graphics design. Unfortunately, we are almost always forced to reject these designs – and we notice that many of our partners don’t really understand why we have to do this.

This topic can get pretty complex, but I am going to try and explain with two examples. The first is a classic: uploading a picture of a friend/loved one. The second is a hot topic in current events: Julian Assange’s image or likeness. Let’s begin with the latter.

The Activist

You most likely know the story behind Julian Assange and Wikileaks. Our platform became involved in this story, like with many current events, when our users and partners wanted to support the cause by uploading designs related to Assange and Wikileaks.

That certainly deserves some praise, first because we love active users who want to express their opinion. And second, it shows that our partners react quickly and creatively to current events. Unfortunately we had to put the brakes on our partners and their creativity because there are some legal limits for these kind of designs. According to German law (which we have to follow because we are based there), the image or likeness of individuals can only be published and sold if that person in the image provides their consent. This is also relevant for individuals who are part of contemporary history. Read more

Colored, comfortable, stylish and hip – these are the new products

Just in time for the start of the month, we introduce a very hip and fashionable product for you: the American Apparel Unisex Jacket in juicy colors like yellow, purple and mermaid green as well as in basic colors like grey and black. You can personalise the product with all printing techniques (digital direct is even available for the back). The product’s quality is superb, as expected from American Apparel, and it holds up well in all types of activities, as seen in our little photoshoot. The white cords and zipper are an added feature which really makes the colours pop!

We continue with another very loose and comfortable product: the men’s jogging bottoms. Since we can’t offer the current version of American Apparel anymore, we switched to another very nice replacement. This product is available in 3 colors: black, navy and sports grey. You can add your designs and text on it with flex and flock foils. New improvement over our old jogging bottoms: 2 pockets on the sides! So you can now pocket your keys, mobile or wallet in there! 🙂

You think that’s it? Haa! It’s just half of our product launch for February. I’ll tell you a little secret: we’ll have a very fancy and fashionable jumper for ladies and a nice and very comfortable hooded jacket for kids available soon. They will hit our platform in mid February and I am already excited to see what you can do with our new products! Enjoy!

Glasgow Shirts for Glaswegians – Get Around Glasgow Interview

I really like what Get Around Glasgow is doing. When you think about city shirts, you imagine a simple I Heart city design or, even more mundane, the city name plastered across the chest. Chris and Adam go beyond that with their Glasgow shirts. They go über-local, focusing on designs and themes that non-Glaswegians would scratch their heads at. But those aren’t their customers.

This kind of shop is exactly the kind of niche t-shirt approach we preach about here at Spreadshirt. Add some great t-shirt designing and a good use of social media to that and and have a great recipe for success. I ask them how they started up, how they market their shop and even try to sneak “the question every Glaswegian gets asked”, without even asking it. Our interview with Get Around Glasgow:

When and why did you open a Spreadshirt shop?

I had helped my brother Andrew set up the  WeKnowSFA football blog and as it become more successful we had to move servers to cope with the bandwidth demand. This had an obvious financial impact and we had to find a way to cover the costs.

I had always wanted to design t-shirts and this seemed like a great way to scratch my design itch and hopefully not lose too much money on the football blog.

We opened our first Spreadshirt shop in Feb 2010, the WeKnowSFA t-shirt shop, and we have added a few other Spreadshirt sites along the way.

What’s the idea behind Get Around Glasgow? Who are your customers?  Read more
